A Government press release this week announces that Prince Edward Island has established a long awaited pain management clinic for P.E.I. residents. In the past residents of P.E.I. had to seek treatment in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia, facing years long waiting list from their already overburdened pain management clinics.
Sharon Vance, of the Arthritis Society of Canada states that “‘People with osteoarthritis, for instance, often are in so much pain they can’t sleep at night.” The clinic expects to see people seeking treatment for a number of ailments including fibromyalgia, and low back pain.
Patients will need to get a referral from their doctor to be treated at the clinic. The clinic will be ran by Dr. Des Colohan and his support staff at the Boardwalk Medical Center, in Charlottetown. the staff expects to see as many as 20 referrals per day.
The Referral Process
Written referrals are to be prepared by a health care professional, with the main referral sources expected to be family physicians and the Workers Compensation Board.
